Beware The Bait
I’m a great fan of eBay, but not a big user – that is I make the
occasional trade like many others – and in so doing have reached a grand
rating of 20. But in the back of my mind the entrepreneur in me was toying
with the idea of opening my own online eBay shop as a fast way to making my
Internet millions. Imagine my surprise and excitement then when I received
an email from eBay inviting me sign up to become a ‘power user’.
It was as if eBay had read my mind! Clearly, eBay had recognised my superior
trading - just 20 - and this invitation was my reward and ticket to my online
store. ‘Click here’, the email urgently advised, ‘and
login to eBay and signup for your account today’.
It was then that the left hemisphere of my brain engaged and decided to
throw a spanner into my master business plan. How could I have reached power
user status with just 20 trades? Don’t listen, screamed my right hemisphere.
Just click on the link! I moused-over the link and something looked fishy
– or should I say “Phishy”.
I had almost been duped by a Phishing scam. I made a note to give my right
hemisphere a good mental slap.

The term “phishing” was coined by those hackers
responsible for stealing America Online (AOL) accounts in the mid 1990’s.
They “fished” for accounts, calling it “phishing”
– the mangled name a common hacker convention of the time.
“The reported number of phishing incidents
increased by 1,471% over the period June 2005 to June 2006”
